The Encryptids

Have you heard of Bigfoot? How about the Loch Ness Monster? These types of creatures are referred to as cryptids, and North Carolina has its very own cryptid mythology!

Start gearing up for a spooky October (which happens to be National Cybersecurity Awareness Month) by learning more about these monsters during the weeks of 9/16 through 10/14. During each of these weeks, the Information Security Office will be setting up tables on campus with free food, giveaways, and raffle entries. You’ll also be able to learn more about The Encryptidsinformation security themed monsters based on local folklore.

All you need to do is follow the clues posted on this page to hunt down the monster of the week! Every visit to a table will get you new and unique giveaways for that week, and additional entries into the SECURITYCON raffle.

Week 2  “The Lake Norman Monster

Location: The Quad @ Polk Place (near Wilson Library)

Date / Time: Wed. September 25th from 9am-noon (or until giveaways run out)

Lake Norman is the largest man-made body of fresh water in North Carolina, and home to a host of legends. Since its construction, it has been a source of UFO sightings, ghost stories, irradiated water concerns, and its very own aquatic monster – “Normie” the Lake Norman monster!

Normie has been described in sightings as being similar to its more famous cousin the Loch Ness Monster. With a scaly long neck and body, big fins, and a boatload of mystique, could this just be an irradiated catfishor something more sinister?

Guidance on how to avoid dangers that may be lurking on the web can be found at SAFE COMPUTING – an information security resource site for the students, faculty, and staff of UNC.

Come out to the quad this Friday from 9am to noon to claim your free Normie gear, grab a snack, and receive a free raffle entry to to win bigger prizes.

Raffle winners can pick up their prizes on October 9th at SECURITYCON in the Student Union.
