UNC-Chapel Hill is ethically bound to respect the rights of copyright owners as outlined in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998. Owners’ rights include protections in the reproduction, distribution, and display of protected content. When the University receives a DMCA-compliant copyright infringement notice from a publisher or other copyright holder, the Information Security Office (ISO) must take actions that include restricting access of the offending user and, potentially, disabling the user’s account. UNC Libraries provides a detailed guide on Copyright Basics to help you avoid compliance problems.
