The Encryptids

Have you heard of Bigfoot? How about the Loch Ness Monster? These types of creatures are referred to as cryptids, and North Carolina has its very own cryptid mythology!

Start gearing up for a spooky October (which happens to be National Cybersecurity Awareness Month) by learning more about these monsters during the weeks of 9/16 through 10/14. During each of these weeks, the Information Security Office will be setting up tables on campus with free food, giveaways, and raffle entries. You’ll also be able to learn more about The Encryptidsinformation security themed monsters based on local folklore.

All you need to do is follow the clues posted on this page to hunt down the monster of the week! Every visit to a table will get you new and unique giveaways for that week, and additional entries into the SECURITYCON raffle.

Week 2  “The Beast of Bladenboro

Location: The Quad @ Polk Place

Date / Time: Friday October 4th from 9am-noon (or until giveaways run out)

The Beast of Bladenboro is the name given to a creature responsible for a series of attacks in Bladenboro, North Carolina between 1953 and 1954. Descriptions from reported sightings ranged from wildcats such as panthers or bobcats, to that of a spectral vampire cat. Folks reported hearing strange wailing noises, and some victims were described as having been drained of blood.

There’s a lot of weird cases of the unexplained out on the web, but you can really sink your teeth in to information security best practices and tips by visiting SAFE COMPUTING – an information security resource site for the students, faculty, and staff of UNC.

Come out to the quad on Friday October 4th from 9am to noon to claim your free Beast of Bladenboro gear, grab a snack, and receive a free raffle entry to to win bigger prizes.

Raffle winners can pick up their prizes on October 9th at SECURITYCON in the Student Union.
